About the event

What you will learn: A multi-block woodcut print allows you to print colours side by side as well as on top of one another. When doing this with transparent colours there’s the potential to create colour mixes and surprising depth in your prints.  Using plywood blocks to create relief prints is a beautiful image-making process, one that allows you to incorporate the grain of the wood into the image. The resulting prints can be rich in colour and texture.

In this one-day workshop, we will consider what’s possible when designing a two-colour multi-block woodcut through careful drawing and designing, before transferring our ideas to the block, cutting them with sharp gouges and then printing by hand, using traditional Japanese hand burnishing techniques. You will leave with a handful of completed prints as well as the block to continue printing in your own time.

Materials: we’ll work with oil-based colour (either printing inks or oil paint with print medium) on Japanese paper, burnishing using a bamboo baren.

Cost: To include all materials £60 for Wessex sculptor members, and £80 for non-members.

Payment: Wessex Sculptors require full payment in advance to secure a place.
